It seems that no matter where we turn lately, very heated discourse concerning border security, asylum seeking and immigration is sure to follow.
And while many people would like to believe that the wave of emigrants fleeing war-torn locales like Syria, or desperate conditions in South and Central America is a new and recent occurrence, the truth is that forced and choice migration has been occurring for as long as there have been people to occupy any land mass with an imaginary boundary distinguishing it from another.
What is important to remember however, no matter what side of this debate you find yourself on is that seldom will you find anyone simply leaving the familiar for the foreign without good reason. It is with that bit of clarity in mind that we of collective global citizenship may want to consider these absconding individuals before flippantly labeling them as lazy, criminals, animals or worse.
If you follow me on social media, I made the comparison today to an instance in Revealed where the designation of Haven by Firo was originally established to enrich the lives of immigrant children, but ultimately fell short as Aida (like many people wooed into a lax’d state of moral fortitude by wealth capitalization opportunities…ehem, Juan Sanchez) found greater satisfaction in status than in service.
Sure, it may be true that for many, the effects of immigration will never be felt personally, but in this season of partisan tirades, vehement outrage and emboldened hatefulness, would you at least commit to taking a moment to view the world and the people trying to survive in it, not with a closed fist, but with an open heart?
